As a kid I grew up building models and playing with HO scale slot cars.  So when my son asked for a slot car set for Christmas, Santa was more than happy to comply.  He merrily set up a Ninco VW touring set along with two VW golfs.  To this day it remains a mystery how the additional 25 feet of track and 20 extra cars appeared later that evening.

While my son loves to race, my interests lean toward building.  This page contains my first build, the Honda RA 272, and a few other favorites.

1965 Honda RA272

This is how it started out life, as a VIP Honda GP.  I've always liked the Honda RA272 so I decided to convert the VIP to resemble Richie Ginther's 1965 Mexican GP winner.

I cut out the cockpit to make room for a full size driver figure and extensively reworked the back end to more closely match the RA272.

The decals came from Pattos Place, a great resource for decals, and the exhaust was cut down from the 1/20th scale Tamiya RA272 kit.

The car rides atop the Beardog F1 chassis and uses the small yet effective Beardog mini-motor for power.  It is blast to drive and scored a second place finish in the concours event of the International F1 Proxy Race.

1971 Ferrari 312B
It actually started life as a Scalextric Ferrari 312B2 that I did not think represented the real car very well. But after looking at it, I thought it might make a good starting point for a 312B so I decided to convert it to resemble Mario Andretti's 1971 South African Grand Prix winner.

It is a clam shell type body so I stripped it down, glued it together, and cut out the bottom for the chassis.  The roll bar and wing mount are brass pieces shaped and cut to fit.

The wing is a cut down version from the original Scalextric model as well as the engine and exhaust details.

The car sits atop a homemade brass chassis but I was still able to use the Beardog mini-motor and incorporate a full driver figure.  The wheels are from Maxi-Models and the wheel inserts are from BWA Wheels.
1967 Eagle Weslake

Another one of my favorites is the Eagle Weslake, arguably, one of the most beautiful Grand Prix cars of all time.  The original body shell is an MRRC Eagle and of course I built it to resemble Dan Gurney's 1967 Spa Grand Prix winner.

The final paintwork and most of the detailing is complete.

Once again the car rides atop a Beardog F1 chassis.  On an interesting note, I was unsure of the color of Gurney's helmet, so I sent a picture and an email to his website for clarafication.  It turns out the blue that I had painted was wrong, it should be black.  But Gurney liked the car so much that he sent an autographed mounting plate to use to display the car.

1975 Ferrari 312T

This car is an old Scalextrci 312T that required extensive reworking to capture the correct shape.  I decided to build this car to resemble Niki Lauda's 1975 world champion ride.

The paintwork is complete and Patto's decals have been added.

Most of my projects ride atop the Beardog F1 chassis, but in this case the wheel base of the car was much too short so I fabricated my first chassis from brass.
